The Legend of the Kokiri

by Aria

Part 1

I am Aria of the Kokiri, children of the Kokiri Forest. I'm 12 years old but of course the Kokiri always remain children so I guess I'll be 12 forever and ever. The Kokiri were rumored in Hyrule to have died out but we just stayed hidden in the forest. There is a story in our forest that once a boy by the name of Link, I think that's his name, who had no fairy, but then he just walked out of the forest and never came back. I sometimes wonder what happened because I think it would be the best thing ever to have all kinds of adventures and meet new people. I'm sure he had all kinds of fun because he didn't come back. The boy was said to have been an ancestor of a Link who became the hero of Hyrule. Now, as far as I know, there is no-one named Link anywhere, not in Hyrule, Kakariko Village, or anywhere outside of Hyrule. I wonder where the old Link lived....

"Aria!" Sara shouted outside her house.

Aria awoke still sleepy from dreams of the strange story of Link. 'Maybe Link lived in this very house!' Aria thought excitedly.

"Aria, you promised to go with me to the forbidden Lost Woods today and look for some Deku Nuts, don't you remember?" her light brown hair friend said, who had by now climbed up the ladder into Aria's house.

"Yes, I do," Aria answered. She then got up and slowly began changing into her dark green daily dress. She stopped halfway. "The Lost Woods!?" she cried.

"Weren't you listening?" Sara asked accusingly.

"But we can't go to the Lost Woods today!"

"Why not?"

"Because I tore my tunic climbing those enormous trees surronding the back of the training ground and..." Aria broke off.

"Did I hear something about the Lost Woods?" a new voice said. It was the voice of Myra. She was the oldest female of the Kokiri and considered herself as the boss of the females of the Kokiri.

"No...I said I'm looking for lost wood," Aria answered slowly.

"Well, that's not what I heard and you know it's forbidden" Myra said.

For a second, the two enemies glared at each other. Aria and Myra were old enemies.

The younger one hated the elder because Myra always used her leadership to try to get the attention of Ki who was one of the Know-it-all brothers. The older one didn't like Aria because she was so different than herself and everyone of the Kokiri liked Aria because she was nice and wasn't bossy.

"Come on. Let's go see if Kyru will let us talk to the Deku Tree," Sara told Aria.

Aria went but not after giving Myra killer looks. The Lost Woods was a forbidden place because once a Kokiri boy named Eon had gone through the woods and had come running back to the village saying that there were all kinds of enemies in the woods. From then on, the Lost Woods was forbidden to any Kokiri and the ones who entered to look for food or Deku Nuts were usually the stronger boys of the children and were usually the leaders of the village like Kyru or Ki. Kyru was the known leader of all the children in the village and also considered the smartest of all of them although he wasn't a Know-it-all brother.

Sara and Aria reached Kyru at his usual place, guarding the entrance to the Deku Tree's Meadow. The young, leader stood there, looking stern, his brown bangs falling gently over his face. His face lit up as he saw the girls walking toward him. Being the guard who blocked the others from talking to the Deku Tree he didn't get many votes on popularity and not many of the others talked to him, besides Aria and Sara. But he had good leadership skills and, according to Aria, was a nice person. The other kids liked Aria and trusted her judgement because she was very outgoing; but it was really Sara whom she did things with.

Kyru's face fell when he heard what they wanted.

"You know no one is allowed in there who has either been summoned by the Deku Tree or we need help on a big problem or has a shield and sword. And you know nothing has happened that's real big since...oh...I don't know...for years," Kyru pointed out.

"But I want to ask the Deku Tree about the old legends. I never get to," complained Aria, her blond hair blowing in the breeze.

"Just talk to me for a while. But one thing, why do you want to know so much about these old legends? It's the past. Why live in it?" he asked.

"I've always been interested in this kind of thing. I just like it; it's just the way I am. Now are you going to let me through or not?" Aria asked.

The boy shook his head no. "I can't let anyone through or take any exceptions. Even for you, Aria. Don't be mad at me. You've got to understand."

"I do. I'm not mad at you. Trust me. I'll be back with things and then you'll have to let me..." she was cut off by another person yelling.

"Gather around everybody," Ki yelled.

Aria hadn't realized it but night had crept up as silent as a thief. The other Kokiri had built a blazing fire and most of them had now gathered around. Kyru, Aria, and Sara joined the circle of green, leafy tunics and dresses which were the children of the forest.

Alohana, the Kokiri storyteller, stood up. He was an old, old man, who was actually a Hyrulian but had come to live in the forest. He had lived a long time and had seen many things but wasn't old enough to have lived at the time of any of the Links of Hyrule. But he had earned the respect of the Kokiri and so lived in the forest living out his life in the calm forest. He entertained them by telling the children stories of Hyrule and the past. Every so often, he told a story about a Link. This was one of those nights.

"This story goes back thousands of years, to the time Hyrule's heir was a young Princess named Zelda. The very first Zelda actually," Alohana said. He told the story...

A long time ago a young Kokiri boy named Link, was summoned by the Deku Tree. This boy wasn't considered special by any of the Kokiri children because he had no fairy. But a girl named Saria was a good friend of his and this is where the story comes from, descendants of Saria. Link told Saria that he had a nightmare about a girl with blond hair taken away by an evil man. It had seemed so real to him. Then he was summoned by the Deku Tree. Link said that the Great Deku Tree had told him to go save Hyrule from the evil and had given him the Kokiri Emerald. He left that very day. Before he had left though, he had gotten hold of the Kokiri Sword and also a Deku Shield or else he wouldn't have been able to get into the Meadow. To this day, no one what happened to Link except that he had many adventures in Hyrule and had obviously not been Kokiri because he hadn't a fairy although some say he got a fairy from the Deku Tree. That Link must have been an ancestor of another Link because there was a Link who lived in Hyrule who became the Hero of Time.

" That is all that is known of the Link of the Kokiri," Alohana finished.

"Where is the Kokiri Sword now?" asked Aria.

"The sword is supposedly inside a hole at the back of the training grounds," Alohana told her.

They had been so enthralled at the story that they hadn't realized the time of night. Most of the children got up and stretched their tired limbs and went back to their homes and slept. But Aria sat there, staring into the fire.

"Sara, Kyru...how about we go and check out those trees at the training grounds tomorrow morning?" the blond girl asked.

"Alright. You'll do anything for an adventure, won't you?" her friends said teasingly.

The next morning, Aria got up bright and early, all set for her search for the Kokiri Sword. She swiftly got into her mended green tunic and set a green headband into her long hair to keep it in place. She was the only girl, only person in fact, in the whole villiage that wore a tunic just for special work. She was, you could say, a sort of tomboy. Aria helped the boys do the hard work by cutting grass and lifting rocks, also if there were enemies around she would usually be the first to come up with the idea on how to kill it. And she loved adventures, that's why she loved the stories about Link. They were so exciting.

Sara, Aria, and Kyru reached the trees at the back of the training grounds.

"I don't see any hole," Sara complained.

"We have to cut these trees down," Aria explained, "It should be about there." Aria pointed at the middle of the grove of trees.

"Well, we three can't just cut these down by ourselves," Kyru said. "Let's ask some of the others."

"No. They'll just think we're weird for wanting to go inside that hole and actually looking for the sword. Besides, you're wrong Kyru, we can do this on our own," Aria retorted.

Since Aria wouldn't let them tell the others their business, they had to work hard at clearing the trees. Finally after 2 weeks of their hard work, it paid off. They finally finished clearing the trees away but the bad thing was they completed it close to nightfall. Plus, they were dead tired since they had been cutting all week so they decided to go in the hole tomorrow morning, after they had slept had regained their energy. They were surprised to actually find the hole in the middle, but they had.

Aria hadn't really wanted to sleep now since they were so close to finding the secret but she was tired and needed to sleep also. She changed into her nightdress, blew out the candle, and tried to sleep. After nearly half an hour of counting sheep, she sat up in bed. 'Why can't I sleep? I'm so tired after working hard and going to sleep late and I can't sleep' millions of thoughts went through her head why she couldn't get to sleep. Then she got a crazy idea. 'No, I won't do it. It's the middle of the night. That's just crazy' But she knew she would end up doing it, no matter what she thought was crazy. Aria changed into her dark green tunic, slipped her light brown shoes on that looked like an elf's shoe, and also put on her green headband onto her blond hair which looked shiny in the moonlight. After she was ready, she set off for the hole in the back of the training grounds with the moon bright and shining overhead...

To be continued...

Note: This story will be continued in another story called The Legend of the Kokiri Part2. The first four stories I'm writing will be tied into a big story called Keepers of Destiny that will be written later.
