Lingering Shadows

Chapter One: Unanswered Questions

It had all happened so long ago. When the realm of Hyrule was covered in the orange clouds of dusk, the Twilight. Zelda remembered it all so clearly. Midna, the Twilight Princess who had been banished from the twilight realm and how Zelda herself had been sealed away in a tower in Hyrule Castle. It seemed that the end for Hyrule was near and it would be forever be ruled by the dark overlord Zant… until Midna found him… a wolf with the most beautiful eyes Zelda had ever seen. She could sometimes see him faintly in her dreams.

Then, in the end she met a young warrior who saved her life and her kingdom. The wolf seemed to have disappeared. Where could it have gone? The warrior who had saved her was Link, a hylian like herself. Zelda could only remember fragments of the wolf, but somehow the wolf and Link seemed connected…

Later, now some years after these events, Zelda and Link kept a good contact with each other. Zelda had realized that she now had feelings towards Link, and so had he for her, but they could not show their love for each other as she was a princess of royal blood and he was just a ranch hand from the Ordana Province. Even so, the two met in secret and took frequent walks or rides around Hyrule when they could. They had yet to reveal their feelings for one another, but they were simply too afraid to do so. But somehow they knew deep down their true feelings for each other.

Zelda was glad that she had met Link. He had been a light in the darkness when he saved Hyrule and her. She was deeply grateful towards him. Had it not been for him, who knew what could have happened? The thought made Zelda shiver.

But now there was a time of peace in Hyrule. No evil had come for a long time. Hyrule prospered under a golden age and was rich and wealthy. Zelda couldn’t escape the fact that she ruled Hyrule alone. But she did so well and the people looked up to her. They thought she was a most excellent ruler and saw no need to have a king. The people soon realized though, that Zelda needed to get married if they were to have an heir to the throne after her…

Zelda looked out into the dark of night, peaceful yet troubled.

‘Hey Midna, I know you’re hiding in my shadow again so you can come out’, Link said casually.

‘Typical’… Midna replied and came out of his shadow.

‘Don’t you have anything important to do, like ruling the twilight realm?’

‘No, in these days nothing happens and I can take it easy. It’s much more fun being here and talk to you or doing mischievous tricks on people’… She gave an impish evil grin towards Link.

‘Not again!’ He yelled. She had taken away his tunic so he just stood there with his underwear.

‘Oh, I am sure Zelda would like to see you like this! She laughed as Link blushed. C’mon, I know you two have something for each other… Midna continued it’s kind of obvious.’ Link didn’t reply. He didn’t like to talk with Midna about his private life; he’d rather keep that to himself.

‘Well, I know you’re the type to worry about everything including Zelda so… I’ll leave you alone for now, Midna stated. Remember, you can always contact me if you wish to talk about something. Just call for me in your shadow or mentally, and I’ll be there. See Ya!’And with those final words, Midna disappeared in a dark cloud of dust.

‘Ah well, I better go to sleep anyway,’ Link thought and yawned. He made himself comfortable in his bed and quickly fell into deep slumber. He dreamt about Zelda and past adventures he had undertaken. The rain fell heavily now outside in the surrounding darkness. Link had forgotten to close the windows so the rain gradually poured in. The cold winds and the rain made him shiver. He pulled the blankets tighter around his body, and didn’t bother going up and closing the windows, he was just too lazy and tired to do it…

‘Link…Link…it’s time to get up,’ he heard a female voice calling softly. Wait, he recognized that voice!

‘Zelda!’ He flung up out of his bed. Embarrassed, he quickly got dressed and tried to comb his messy hair. Suddenly, he heard a familiar laughter.

Midna!!’ He screamed furiously.

‘Sorry, I couldn’t help it! I just had to see your face!! She laughed out. I mean, you should have seen yourself then! You’re so easily fooled, I mean it! Eh he he he!’

‘Oh, gimme a break, will ye? First the clothes, now this! You’re so evil Twilight Princess!

He laughed but at the same time said a little angry. But his mood changed when he saw all the water on the floor. Hey, how did all this water come here?’ He demanded.

‘Well, I think someone forgot to close the windows yesterday’…

‘Oh, right’… and Link started to dry the water up with an old towel.

‘Hey, Link, can’t you go see Zelda… you haven’t seen her for a while you know’…

‘’I’ve already told you, we can’t see each other that often, you know why’…

Link said a bit sad. ‘It can’t be that dangerous, can it? Midna asked him. I know you want to see her, I can tell from your eyes, so stop denying It.’Midna spoke seriously. ‘Alright, I give up… yes I do want to see her very much, Link admitted. I can’t help it; I need to see that she’s alright.’ These words made Midna grow quiet. He had never spoken his private life like this before. She wanted to know everything, every detail, because she was after all, very curious.

‘I won’t tell you more than that,’ Link said as if he had read her thoughts. ‘Well, go then. And when you come back I want to know what you two did’, Midna said, although she knew that Link wouldn’t reveal all of what he and Zelda had done. ‘We’ll see, well goodbye for now,’ Link said and closed his door. Midna had already disappeared. Link sat up on Epona and slowly began making his way towards Hyrule Castle. He felt he could take it easy this fine sunny day.
