Forever Lying in Wait

By Ellie

Author's Note: This was inspired by MiguelP. If you've ever truly listened to the Hyrule Field Nighttime Music from Twilight Princess, you might get a pretty good idea of who is the speaker. Enjoy! :)

            My soul wanders endlessly

            With night as my shield

            The moon as my crutch

            Forever lying in wait.

These are the words I sing now. I sang them in the past, and I sing them now, as I will forevermore. Though, I’m not sure why I sing. Maybe it’s to calm my restlessness, or to reminisce about my life. I always did enjoy singing when I was alive, and a part of me wanted to keep the shadow of my former self alive as well.

Or maybe I sing for him.

Yes, that is probably why I sing. He gave me reason to live. He was the one to brighten my day, so matter how gloomy it was to begin with.

            I loved him.

This is why it was a painful day when he left. I was never sure why he left or where he went. That’s when I had no more voice left to sing, not that I had any more reason. Without him, my days were monotonous and dim. With that, I lost all will to continue life.

Now I wander the land at night. I found the daylight to be as vibrant and radiant as I found him, which was almost unbearable even for me.

Oh God! It couldn’t be! He’s still alive after so many years?  Oh, woeful night! And he’s still riding my beloved mare? Oh, goddesses, why do you mock me?

Oh, I think he can hear me! He has a strange look on his face? Could he possibly remember me after so long?

Oh, I see he’s leaving. He’s going off in the south. Oh, perhaps he’s going to what remains of my home!

Ah, well. I’d best clear off before dawn.

            My soul wanders endlessly

            With night as my shield

            The moon as my crutch

            Forever lying in wait.
